SHADES OF BLUE AND SUSHI NIGHTS

Quick post for ya on this beautiful Monday!  Sucks to be in the office when the weather is just perfect.  Especially when it dropped to 60s this past weekend.  Lowest temperature it's been in 30 years in July.  Cray cray.  Today it's going to be about low to mid seventies.  My faaaaaaaaave.  I had another jam packed weekend that started on Thursday.  I love me some three day weekends!  I went to Underground two nights in a row.  Needless to say I am overjoyed that they are finally reopening.  They have been having private preview parties for the past two weeks and finally open up to the public THIS THURSDAY!  But I'll get more into that on a different post.  Only because this post is to tell you about Maki Sake Mondays at Sunda!  Officially kicking off tonight and occurs on various Mondays (see website for available dates).

So, what is Maki Sake Mondays?  Have you ever thought to yourself, "I wish I knew how to roll sushi maki".  Well here's your chance to learn.  Learn AND drink sake at the same time.  Chef Jess De Guzman teaches you all it takes to create the perfect maki roll.  It definitely takes lots of practice!  But no worries, after what seemed like an endless flow of sake, my creations just kept looking prettier and prettier.  Not sure if it was that my skills improved, or things just got blurry after that third glass.  Also if yours turns out into a huge fail, Sunda comes to the rescue and brings out a few of their signature rolls for you to chomp on while you try to figure out what you did wrong.  I would suggest this event for a fun and creative date night or with a small group of friends.  I had The Hubster with me and we had a great time and also met some fun peeps!  I also thought what made this event great was that they gave you the option of what type of roll you wanted to make.  I opted for a sushi tempura and hubs went for spicy tuna.  And you can Instagram the crap out of your creations using the hashtag #MakiSakeMondays because I wanna see them!  So book your reservation for the next Maki Sake Monday and get yo' roll on!

YEAR OF THE SNAKE

What better way to celebrate Chinese New Year than a dinner date with The Hubster at one of my fave asian fusion spots, SUNDA!  They have a special Year of the Snake menu that is running til Wednesday, February 13th.  There are some dishes that I would definitely recommend.  So here we gooooooo!  Yummy yummy!

DOS taming the Lion.  =)

Jamo and Ginger for The Hubster and Hello Kitty cocktail for me!  How could you NOT order a drink called Hello Kitty?!

Hot N Sour Soup - spicy and tangy just the way momma likes it!

Just your everyday Chinese Lion Dance weaving through the tables.

Took these two a while to notice.  Haha.

Olympian Jordyn Wieber in the house!

Mushroom Siu Mai - Healthier version of the traditional pork siu mai.  Delish and so soft.

Mu Shu Duck - This was The Hubster's favorite dish of the night.  He kept raving about the soft and buttery texture of the pancake.  The duck and sauce combo was very savory and delish.  These didn't last very long on the plate.  Nom nom nom.

Ginger Tofu - wasn't my favorite dish and a little bland for my taste but The Hubster enjoyed it.

Szechwan Long Beans - This was so nostalgic for me.  My momma used to put long beans in soup and this definitely brought back some fond memories.

Steamed Fish - I love having a healthy dish option and this one was in such a yummy broth.  Definitely one of my favorites of the night.  I am one of those people that loooooooves fish.  There was a spicy kick to this dish that was unexpected.  Yummo!

Round 2 for me and Round 5 for The Hubster.  =)

Pepper Steak - biting into these chunks of filet was like chewing on a puffy meat cloud.  The meat was so tender and soft and the flavors were so tangy with a touch of sweet.  I will definitely be thinking of this for quite some time.  I hope they keep this one on the menu!

After 7 wonderful dishes, I needed to wash it down with some green tea.  How cute is the little honey scooper?

Ended with an "OFF THE HOOK" bang!  Fried red snapper!  How could you resist?  I had no room left in my belly but I forced and savored every bite!  I only made it to two pieces before I fell into a massive food coma!  The fish was amaze!  The outer parts were just the right amount of crispy and the fish stayed moist inside.  And what a crazy fun presentation!

Thank you to Deanna, Scott and Sunda for a crazy fantastic meal and a fun night.  Crazy how many times I've been to Sunda and never sat in the main dining area.  Hahaha.  The Hubster and I for some reason always sat and ate up at the bar.  Hmmmm... I wonder why.  The main dining room was surprisingly cozy given the gigantic space of the restaurant.

Make your reservations now for tomorrow night or Wednesday night and fill your tummy with some Chinese fusion goodness!

I think this photo was when I was super toasty on some delicious cocktails because I am super cheeeeeesing in this picture.  See the original post from this awesome fun cooking/mixology class HERE!  It was such a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon with one of my besties!  Cooking is so much better when there are cocktails involved.  Give it a go!  Also, if you've got a man that needs a lesson or two in the cooking department, then bring him along!  You can throw in some nuggets of love such as "Why can't you cook like Chef Jess?!  Geeez!"
